One of the largest Greek Islands which is also one of the prime Ionian Islands is Kefalonia found on the west side of the Greek mainland . Kefalonia can be spelt in many different ways and some of these ways include Kefallinia, Cephalonia and Cephallonia. Many people believe that the island is said to be named after Cephalus, a character from Greek Mythology whose name in English translates to ‘head’.

Kefalonia is a stunning island with deep caves, blue seas and spectacular mountain ranges. It is also deep in history. The island went under many various rulings from Roman, Norman and English ownership and was only intergrated with Greece in 1864 along with the other Ionian Islands.

In 1953 the Island would change forever, in looks and in population when a series of catastrophic earthquakes hit the island, one of them hitting a massive 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a vast amount of buildings and resulted in several tens of thousands of dollars in damages, and a vast majority of people who lived on the island left soon after to nearby islands to start a new life. There are remarkable signs still on the island such as ruined buildings that have been left untouched as a monument to the 1953 disaster.

As one of the larger Greek islands Kefalonia gets plenty of visitors each year during peak periods mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers as these are both nearby and this has been improved since the release of a film that was filmed on the island of Kefalonia in 2001.

One of the most famed resorts on the island is Lassi with its lively impression that is ideal for all kinds of holidaymakers. With restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets lining both sides of the main coastal road so you won’t get bored. If you enjoy walks on the beaches Lassi has the best long sweeping sandy beaches and winding bays that will make for romantic evening strolls.

You are guaranteed to see beautiful awe-inspiring sandy beaches and breathtaking seas in the Lassi resort. With abnormal rocky coastlines and striking bays Kefalonia brings scenery and relaxation to your getaway . If you are fascinated in exploring the island, there are regular cruises and trips that take you to other parts of the island and nearby islands.

Scuba diving can be a great experience, especially while your on your holiday, it will make it a more memorable time leaving you wanting more. You don’t have to be fully qualified or experienced, even if you’re a novice you will get the chance to discover a completely different element.
